How to Remove and Fit Bike Pedals on a Child's Bike

Removing and fitting bike pedals sounds simple, but the direction matters. Turn the wrong pedal the wrong way or force it into place, and you can damage the crank arm, strip the threads, or leave the bike unsafe for your child.

This GrowBike guide is written for parents in Bahrain who want a clear, practical explanation. You may be removing pedals for storage, transport, replacement, maintenance, or to help your child practise balance before learning to pedal.

The job is not difficult, but it must be done gently and correctly. The most common mistake is treating both pedals the same. They are not the same.

If the bike is part of your GrowBike subscription and the pedal is stuck, loose, damaged, or not fitting smoothly, please do not force it. Contact GrowBike and we can guide you or support you properly.

Why would you remove pedals?

Common Reasons Parents Remove Bike Pedals

Parents usually remove pedals for one of four reasons. The bike may need to fit better in a car or storage area. The pedals may need replacing because they are worn or cracked. A pedal may feel loose or noisy after use. Or the pedals may be removed temporarily so a child can practise balance before moving into full pedalling.

Pedal removal can be useful, but it is not a shortcut for a wrong bike size. If the bike is too big, too heavy, or difficult for your child to control, removing the pedals will not solve the main fit issue.

The right first step is always the same: correct bike size, safe setup, and a child who feels confident.

Quick Pedal Direction Guide

Task Right Pedal Left Pedal
Remove Turn counterclockwise Turn clockwise
Fit Turn clockwise Turn counterclockwise
Easy memory rule Toward the back to remove Toward the front to fit

Simple rule: to fit pedals, turn both pedals toward the front of the bike. To remove pedals, turn both pedals toward the back of the bike.

Understanding Bike Pedal Threads

This is the part that confuses most parents. Bike pedals are threaded differently on each side of the bike.

R
Right side / chain side

The Right Pedal Uses a Normal Thread

The right pedal is on the chain side of the bike. It works like most normal screws. It tightens clockwise and loosens counterclockwise.

If you are sitting on the bike and facing forward, this is the pedal under your right foot.

L
Left side / non-chain side

The Left Pedal Uses a Reverse Thread

The left pedal is reverse-threaded. It tightens counterclockwise and loosens clockwise. This feels strange at first, but it is correct.

This design helps pedals stay secure while the bike is being ridden.

Tools You May Need

For most kids' bikes, you only need a few basic tools. Use the correct tool and avoid forcing anything.

🔧 15 mm pedal spanner

Many standard pedals use flat sides for a 15 mm pedal spanner or thin wrench.

🔩 Allen key

Some pedals are fitted or removed from the inside of the crank arm using an Allen key.

🧹 Clean cloth

Use it to clean old grease, dust, sand, or dirt from the threads.

🧪 Bicycle grease

A small amount helps prevent sticking and makes future removal easier.

💧 Penetrating oil

Useful only when a pedal is stuck. Give it time to work before trying again.

📏 Torque wrench

Helpful if available, but most parents will use firm controlled hand pressure with the correct tool.

Before You Start

A small setup step makes the job easier and safer.

✓ Setup checklist
  • ✓ Place the bike somewhere stable.
  • ✓ Make sure the child is not sitting on the bike.
  • ✓ Identify right and left from the rider's position.
  • ✓ Look for R and L markings on the pedals.
  • ✓ Keep your hands clear of the chain, chainring, and crank movement.
  • ✓ Use steady pressure, not sudden force.

If the tool slips, stop and reposition it. A slipping wrench can damage the pedal flats or hurt your hand.

Part 1: How to Remove Bike Pedals

Take your time. Most pedal damage happens when people rush or forget that the left side is reverse-threaded.

1

Identify the right and left pedal

Stand behind the bike as if you are about to ride it. The right pedal is on the chain side. The left pedal is on the opposite side. Check for R and L markings if visible.

2

Position the crank for leverage

Rotate the crank so the wrench has room to move. You want controlled pressure without your hand hitting the frame, floor, or chain area.

3

Remove the right pedal

Place the pedal spanner on the flat part of the pedal axle. Turn counterclockwise to loosen. Once loose, unscrew it the rest of the way by hand.

4

Remove the left pedal

The left pedal is the opposite. Turn clockwise to loosen. This is normal. Once it breaks free, continue by hand until it comes off completely.

5

Keep the pedals separate

Place the right pedal on the right side and the left pedal on the left side. This avoids mixing them up when you fit them again.

⚠ If the pedal will not move
↻ Check the direction again
🔧 Seat the wrench properly
💧 Try penetrating oil
⛔ Do not hammer or force it

If the pedal is still stuck, stop. Forcing a stuck pedal can damage the crank arm. GrowBike customers should contact us before continuing.

Part 2: How to Fit Bike Pedals

The most important rule when fitting pedals is to start by hand. If it does not turn smoothly by hand, stop and realign it.

1

Clean the threads

Wipe the pedal threads and crank threads with a clean cloth. Look for dirt, sand, old grease, rust, or damaged threads.

2

Apply a small amount of grease

Add a thin layer of bicycle grease to the pedal threads. Do not overdo it. A light coating is enough to help the pedal fit smoothly and prevent sticking later.

3

Start the right pedal by hand

Take the pedal marked R and place it into the right crank arm. Turn clockwise by hand. It should thread smoothly for several turns.

4

Start the left pedal by hand

Take the pedal marked L and place it into the left crank arm. Turn counterclockwise by hand. This feels unusual, but it is correct.

5

Tighten both pedals firmly

Once each pedal is threaded properly by hand, use the spanner to tighten it firmly. Right pedal tightens clockwise. Left pedal tightens counterclockwise.

6

Wipe and test

Wipe excess grease, spin each pedal, and check that there is no wobble, grinding, clicking, or looseness before your child rides.

Never start pedal installation with a wrench. Starting by hand is the easiest way to avoid cross-threading and crank damage.

Common Pedal Problems and What They Mean

Small pedal problems can make a child's bike feel uncomfortable or unsafe. Here is what to watch for.

1
Installation issue

The Pedal Feels Tight After One or Two Turns

Stop immediately. This may mean the pedal is on the wrong side, going in at an angle, or the thread is dirty or damaged. Remove it and start again by hand.

2
Safety issue

The Pedal Wobbles

Do not let your child ride. A wobbling pedal may be loose, worn, or fitted into damaged crank threads. It needs to be checked before use.

3
Noise issue

The Pedal Clicks While Riding

A clicking sound can come from a loose pedal, dry threads, worn pedal bearings, crank movement, or another drivetrain issue. Start by checking pedal tightness. If the sound continues, inspect the bike.

4
Ride comfort

The Pedal Spins Roughly

Rough spinning may mean the pedal bearing is dirty, dry, worn, or damaged. For children, this can make riding feel harder. They may not explain the issue clearly; they may simply avoid the bike.

Special Notes for Kids' Bikes

Children do not always notice mechanical problems early. A loose or uncomfortable pedal may simply make them stop enjoying the bike.

👀 Check after first rides

If pedals were recently fitted, check them again after a few short rides to make sure they remain tight.

👞 Watch foot position

If your child's foot keeps slipping, the pedal may be too smooth, too small, or worn.

🚲 Flat pedals are best

Most young riders should use normal flat pedals. Clipless pedals are not suitable for beginners.

📏 Fit matters first

Do not use pedal removal to fix a bike that is too big. The child still needs a bike that feels safe and controllable.

⚑ Final safety check before riding
⛵ Helmet fitted properly
👞 Closed shoes on
🔧 Pedals tight
🚲 Pedals spin smoothly
🛑 Brakes working
🔴 No clicking or wobble

Ask your child to pedal slowly in a safe open area first. Do not let them ride fast until you are confident everything is secure.

Our goal is simple: your child should ride a correctly fitted, safe, comfortable bike without parents needing to become bike mechanics.

Final Thoughts

Removing and fitting bike pedals is easy once you understand the main rule: the right and left pedals thread in different directions.

The right pedal tightens clockwise. The left pedal tightens counterclockwise. To fit pedals, turn toward the front of the bike. To remove pedals, turn toward the back of the bike.

Take your time, start every pedal by hand, use a small amount of grease, and never force anything that feels wrong. For kids' bikes, safety and confidence matter more than speed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which pedal is reverse-threaded?

The left pedal is reverse-threaded. It tightens counterclockwise and loosens clockwise.

How do I know which pedal is right and which is left?

Most pedals are marked with R and L. The right pedal goes on the chain side of the bike. The left pedal goes on the opposite side.

Should I use grease on pedal threads?

Yes. A small amount of bicycle grease helps the pedal thread smoothly and makes future removal easier.

Can I remove pedals to help my child learn balance?

Yes, in some cases. Removing pedals can help a child practise balance before pedalling. This works best when the bike is the correct size and the child can place both feet comfortably on the ground.

What happens if I fit the wrong pedal on the wrong side?

You may cross-thread and damage the crank arm. If the pedal does not thread smoothly by hand, stop immediately and check the side.

Can my child ride if one pedal is slightly loose?

No. A loose pedal can damage the bike and may become unsafe. Tighten it properly or get the bike checked before riding.

What should GrowBike customers do if a pedal feels loose?

Stop using the bike and contact GrowBike. We can guide you or arrange the right support so your child can ride safely.
